How to Verify If a Restaurant Is Truly Halal Online

Finding a restaurant that claims to be "halal" is easy. Ensuring that it actually is, however, is another story. Here is a simple checklist you can complete from your phone before booking or ordering.

1. Look for Official Certification

A restaurant that is seriously halal almost always displays its certificate:

• On its website (often at the bottom of the page or in the "About" section).
• On its Google Business page or social media.
• On the storefront or menu, in a photo.

Note the name of the certifying body (AVS, ARGML, Achahada, HMC, HFA, JAKIM, MUI…). A logo alone is not enough — the organization must exist and the certificate must be currently valid.

2. Check the Certifier's Website

Most major certifying bodies publish a list of certified establishments on their official website. A quick search of the restaurant's name will confirm (or not) whether it is indeed on the up-to-date list.

If the restaurant claims to be certified by an organization but does not appear in its directory, this is a red flag.

3. Use Muslim Map

On Muslim Map, each restaurant listing indicates:

• The declared halal status and, when available, the verified certification by the community.
• Reviews and reports from other Muslim users.
• The presence or absence of alcohol on the menu, which is an important criterion for many.

Filtering the map for "certified halal restaurants" allows you to eliminate ambiguous cases right from the start.

4. Read Reviews with a Halal Eye

Reviews on Google, TripAdvisor, or The Fork do not filter by faith. Search explicitly for:

• Keywords like "halal", "certified", "Muslim", "no alcohol".
• Mentions of pork or bacon dishes — a "halal" restaurant should not have any on the menu.
• Comments pointing out a shared kitchen with non-halal dishes (cross-contamination).

5. Ask the Question Directly

As a last resort, a message to the restaurant on Instagram or WhatsApp can clear up many doubts:

"Hello, is your meat certified halal? By which organization? Do you serve alcohol?"

A clear and quick response is a good sign. A vague response, or no response at all, is also telling.

• Visible certificate and identifiable certifying body
• Restaurant listed in the certifier's official directory
• Consistent Muslim Map listing (status, certification, reviews)
• Customer reviews with no mention of pork, alcohol, or doubt
• Direct response from the restaurant if necessary
